Women Thrive in New Media

From Arianna Huffington at the Huffington Post to Melinda Henneberger, editor-in-chief of popular site Politics Daily, many of the stars in the ever-inflating new media landscape are women. According to columnist Luisita Lopez Torregrosa, a recent feature from Business Insider that listed the most influential names in the new media circuit included 13 women in its list– or 52%.

“Maybe that’s not such a big number, but it looms large next to the pitiful number of women (six) named by the National Law Journal among the 40 most influential lawyers of the decade”, Lopez Torregrosa wrote in Politics Daily, suggesting that women may be outperforming male competitors in the fields of online journalism, multimedia or other communications. Could women find it easier to thrive in independent environments which are free from many of the trappings of corporate hierarchies and glass ceilings? The field may still be young for a verdict to be out at this stage, but this is certainly an interesting development to watch. As trained journalists and founders of a web-based editorial business, we can vouch for its importance.
